A five-year-old boy has died during a family ski vacation in Japan after he became trapped in a ski area travelator.
“As a grown-up, I sometimes feel it's somewhat frightening.” – A statement from a seasoned guest.
The Circumstances Surrounding the Deadly Incident
On Sunday morning, the child, named Hinata Goto, was about to step off the travelator at a Hokkaido resort when he lost his balance. His arm became ensnared in the machinery.
This equipment was equipped with a automatic stop feature, but it did not engage. It only stopped when the boy's mother pressed the emergency stop button.
Rescue workers took forty minutes disassembling part of the travelator to free the boy, who by then had fallen unconscious. He was later pronounced dead at the medical facility.
Ongoing Investigation into Safety Mechanisms
Staff at the resort stated that the travelator's safety mechanism, which should stop operations if it sensed a obstruction, had been tested earlier in the day.
Police are conducting a probe to determine whether there was any negligence, such as in the manufacturing and servicing of the conveyor.
Design Details of the Conveyor in Question
- Installed about half a decade ago: The travelator is roughly 30 meters in length and 60cm (24 in) wide.
- No hand rails: The setup transports people between the resort's car park and the ski slopes.
Japanese media cited other visitors saying they have also stumbled while using the same conveyor.
Resort Response and The Resort
A spokesperson for the resort apologised for the tragedy and stated they will implement measures to prevent a recurrence.
Hokkaido is considered the ski capital of Japan and hosts countless tourists every year, with the majority of them staying during the cold season for ski holidays.
