An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my travel mate was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
