As Swimmers Escaped Danger, Widely-Shared Picture Depicts Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, heard cracking sounds reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, talking to a couple who had run up the slope soaked, she heard someone coming up behind her. It was a lifeguard, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and without footwear … He was sprinting into something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle running.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics treating many the injured.

Community Response and Support

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the violence becoming a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen helping out, such as entering the surf to save people who were struggling.

After the tragedy, statements of support circulated widely. An online statement expressed gratitude for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The group of beach patrol issued a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and solidarity. We are touched by the kindness directed at our team,” the organization commented. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those involved.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew acted heroically from the moment the violence started until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” said a local official.

“These individuals show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on Sunday should be commended.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the face of such hatred.”
