Chernobyl Disaster Containment Structure No Longer Effectively Blocks Radiation, Needs Major Restoration – International Atomic Energy Agency
The containment structure covering the Chernobyl nuclear reactor within Ukraine can no longer perform its main function of containing radioactive material, according to the IAEA. This loss of function follows a drone strike earlier this year that blew a hole in the protective shell.
Structural Compromise from Aerial Attack Compromises Containment System
An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in the second month of the year caused a breach in the multibillion-euro “new safe confinement” structure. This massive shield, built at a cost of €1.5bn and completed in 2019, was designed to seal off radioactive material for decades. A recent IAEA inspection last week found that the drone impact had weakened the structural integrity of the steel arch.
The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, said IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. He added that inspectors found no permanent damage to its load-bearing structures or monitoring systems.
Background Context of the Chernobyl Shelter
The original 1986 explosion at Chornobyl – at a time when Ukraine was part of the USSR – released radiation across Europe. In a hurried containment effort, Soviet authorities constructed a concrete shelter over the ruined reactor, but it had a 30-year lifespan. The New Safe Confinement was constructed to enable the future dismantling of the original structure, the damaged reactor building, and the molten fuel within.
Current Situation and Necessary Steps
While some repairs have been carried out, the IAEA stressed that a full-scale repair effort is absolutely necessary. This is needed to stop additional deterioration and to ensure safety for the coming decades. Officials in Ukraine previously reported that a drone carrying a high-explosive warhead struck the plant, igniting a blaze and damaging the protective cladding.
