Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Backlash

Individuals from across the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Social Media Post

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a substantial sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.

“What a appalling and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his party to defend the statements.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation after the shooting of a different political figure.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
