Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 elections conclude.

"Yes, I would be lying if I said no," the governor commented when pressed about contemplating a White House bid after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's tenure as governor ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has stepped forward as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary disclosed intentions to pull federal funds from California and threatened eliminating the authority to provide trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," he stated, following a recent deadly accident in California involving an non-citizen trucker that led to loss of life and casualties.

His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had before stated he was withholding $40m from the state for ignoring English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a recent release addressing the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recent poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has grown to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
