Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
