After enduring significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now grappling with abnormally warm conditions for late February.
All-Time High Heat
On Friday midday, the thermometer reached ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in central LA, according to weather officials. This exceeds the old record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established just last year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on NWS charts for the region.
Safety Warnings
The weather service stated that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This dramatic increase in mercury arrives just after a massive winter storm that pummeled the area last week. That storm delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to higher elevations, causing evacuation orders for millions residents.
Sadly, the conditions also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
Looking ahead a cooldown is coming. Readings were predicted to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that hit 90°F were Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were forecast to see the upper eighties.
In the coming days, downtown Los Angeles can expect weather in the 80s, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the start of March.
