Microsoft Confronts Legal Action in Australia Over Supposed Artificial Intelligence Cost Deception

When Microsoft declared a substantial price increase for its productivity software, customers were allegedly presented with a limited selection: either agree to the increased fee with artificial intelligence tools or cancel their subscription.

According to Australia's consumer watchdog, the firm supposedly did not reveal a alternative choice that enabled customers to keep using the software at the original price without the artificial intelligence feature, called Copilot.

Legal Proceedings Launched by Oversight Body

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has brought the technology company to the national judiciary, claiming that the corporation misled approximately 2.7 million local individual and household subscribers.

The ACCC states that messages distributed to subscribers only outlined two choices: paying the increased price or ending the service.

We allege that Microsoft's emails and online announcement were inaccurate or deceptive, suggesting that customers had to accept the more expensive AI-included subscriptions, and the sole alternative choice was to discontinue, the head of the commission, the regulatory leader, stated.

Hidden Option Revealed

The regulator claims that a additional option, referred to as standard subscriptions, existed but was withheld from customers.

This plan allowed members to keep the capabilities of their existing subscription without Copilot at the previous reduced price.

Subscribers were solely presented with this option when they began terminating their subscription, according to the ACCC.

Price Increases and Customer Impact

The annual membership cost for the software personal plan rose by 45% from $109 to $159 AUD with the AI tool included.

The family plan saw a 29% increase, jumping from $139 AUD to $179 AUD per year.

Microsoft informed auto-renewing subscribers about the AI inclusion and pending price increase through two emails and a online article.

We will allege in court that Microsoft intentionally left out reference to the classic plans in its notifications and hid their availability until subsequent to subscribers initiated the termination procedure to boost the quantity of users on higher-priced Copilot-integrated subscriptions, the chairperson continued.

Critical Applications and Limited Substitutes

The office apps featured in 365 subscriptions are vital in many people's daily activities, and considering there are few alternatives to the bundled package, terminating may not have been a feasible option for users.

Consumers could have chosen the classic plan if they had been aware of all the viable options, according to the commission.

Probe and Possible Consequences

The commission's inquiry drew on a large quantity of user complaints as well as digital discussions from sites such as Reddit.

The ACCC is pursuing directives comprising penalties, injunctions, formal statements, customer compensation and expenses.

The highest penalty could be the greater of $50m, three times the overall gains acquired, or thirty percent of the corporation's modified revenue during the breach timeframe.

Company Response

Customer confidence and openness are top priorities for the organization, and we are reviewing the commission's allegation in depth, a company representative stated.

We continue to be dedicated to working constructively with the oversight body and ensuring our procedures comply with all legal and ethical standards.
