As he approaches his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present

The Spanish coach was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. Yet, that early success is still his only significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” the manager said in response to a query about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

This weekend sees the anniversary with a game facing Everton, the identical team Arsenal faced immediately following his appointment was announced.

Present Challenges

With second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League for the first time. This potential shift despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

He currently has 18 months remaining on the deal he signed in 2024, yet understands fully that results must come in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, highlighting the constant necessity to prove his worth. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He stated further, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the board and owners, yet identifying the team's buy-in as paramount. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

Arsenal heads into the upcoming game dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a muscle problem that is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Regardless of the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
