Nigeria's Separatism Figurehead Found Responsible on Terror-Related Charges

Courtroom scene

In Nigeria, a court has convicted independence advocate Nnamdi Kanu on terror-related charges ten years following his initial arrest.

Judicial authorities affirmed that Kanu aired a series of transmissions encouraging violence and fatal acts as part of his movement for an independent nation in Nigeria's south-eastern region, known as Biafra.

He was found culpable on all seven charges he confronted—encompassing terrorism, treason, and involvement with a banned secessionist group.

Rise of a Separatist Leader

Previously a relatively obscure personality, Kanu's popularity escalated in 2009 when he launched Radio Biafra, a broadcaster that advocated an independent state for the Igbo people, broadcast to Nigeria from London.

Although he grew up in south-eastern Nigeria, where he attended the University of Nsukka, Kanu relocated to the UK prior to completing his studies and obtained British nationality.

In 2014, he set up the Indigenous People Of Biafra (Ipob), an organization calling for independence.

Ban and Armed Activities

Ipob was banned as a terrorist organisation in 2017. Its armed wing—the Eastern Security Network—has been accused of murders and additional incidents of violence in recent years.

Issuing his ruling, Judge James Omotosho stated: "Mr Kanu was aware of what he was doing, he was determined to carrying out these intimidations without regard to his own people."

"From the incontrovertible evidence, it is evident that the accused performed preliminary actions of terrorism."

"He was given the duty to clarify himself but did not manage to do so."

Response and Judicial Process

Kanu is a popular figure in his movement's stronghold in the south-east, but reaction to the verdict there has so far been subdued.

During proceedings ahead of the ruling, Kanu insisted that proceedings could not proceed because he had not yet submitted his final written address, alleging the judge of partiality and not understanding the law.

The judgement was announced after Kanu had been forcibly removed from the courtroom for unruly conduct.

Arrest History

He was first arrested in October 2015 but he violated bail conditions in 2017 and departed the country after a military raid on his home. Judicial authorities later revoked his bail in March 2019 and he was detained again in 2021 in Kenya.

Historical Background

Demands for Biafra's sovereignty trace back decades.

In 1967 leaders of the Igbo community proclaimed a state of Biafra, but after a devastating civil war, which resulted in the deaths of up to a million people, the secessionist rebellion was quelled.
