The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of a personal collection highlighting issues the company was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing conflict between the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated through social media that he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created several years back for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
