The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Test Series Squad
England have chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
